Ali vs. Frazier. The Red Sox vs. the Yankees. Doha vs Singapore.
For the past decade, Singapore's Changi International Airport and Doha's Hamad International Airport have been forwards and backwards, battling it out the title “World’s Best”.'.
Every 12 months, UK-based airline and airport reviews and rankings website Skytrax surveys travelers from world wide to compile its list of the perfect airports on this planet. For 2024, the respect goes to Qatar Airport, known for its ultra-modern design, easy-to-navigate terminals and world-class shopping.
Singapore (SIN) had the title in 2023 and 2020, while Doha (DOH) took the title in 2022 and 2021.
“This 12 months, [Hamad International Airport] is celebrating its tenth 12 months of operation and we’re truly honored that passengers have voted us the perfect airport on this planet for the third time,” Badr Mohammed Al Meer, CEO of Qatar Airways Group, said in a press release. “We look forward to continuing to surprise and delight passengers with unforgettable and extraordinary passenger journeys in the years to come.”
DOH is one in every of several airports that gives free city tours for passengers with long layovers, which earned it high marks from respondents. It can also be home to the Oryx Airport Hotelwhere visitors can enjoy spa treatments, a squash court and an 82-foot swimming pool.
The Skytrax rankings were announced on April 17 on the World Airport Awards in Frankfurt. Data for the list was collected between August 2023 and March 2024 from people of greater than 100 nationalities. Respondents were asked about a wide range of topics, from the convenience of passing through security checkpoints to the standard and number of food and drinks.
European airports dominate
CDG's Terminal 3 was named the perfect low-cost terminal on this planet and Paris Orly (ORY) was named the perfect regional airport in Europe.
Other European airports also received awards from Skytrax. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) received the award for the perfect airport security on this planet, Zurich Airport (ZRH) was recognized as best at school within the “20-30 million passengers per year” category and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) took the very best place within the “10” category -20 million passengers per 12 months.
Japan shines
Seven of Skytrax's top 20 airports are in Asia. Both of Tokyo's hubs, Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT), landed in the highest 10, with Haneda ending one place ahead of its sister airport in fourth place.
Sapporo's New Chitose Airport (CTS) won the award for the world's most improved airport, while Nagoya's Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) was named best-in-class airport serving 5-10 million passengers per 12 months.
Kansai International Airport (KIX), which serves the Osaka region, received the award for the world's best airport baggage delivery.
Regional highlights
A complete of 570 airports worldwide were assessed.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has been named the perfect airport in North America.
Down under, Melbourne Airport (MEL) received the highest award for the Australia-Pacific region.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi has been named the perfect airport in India.
Cape Town Airport (CPT) won the Best Airport in Africa award and recognition because the African airport with the perfect staff service. King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban was the winner within the category of airports with fewer than five million passengers per 12 months.
El Dorado International Airport (BOG), which serves Bogota, Colombia, was voted the perfect airport in South America, while Panama Tocumen Airport (PTY) received the award as the perfect airport in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Not just airports
In addition to evaluating airports, Skytrax also gives out awards for exceptional airport hotels.
The retro-inspired one TWA Hotel at New York JFK was named the perfect airport hotel in North America. Other awards on this category included Hyatt Regency Shenzhen (Best in China), Hilton Munich Airport (Best in Europe) and Crowne Plaza Changi Airport (Best within the World, for the ninth 12 months in a row).
