Oakland police officer dies from injuries sustained in on-call accident in 2018

An Oakland police officer who was critically injured in a crash while responding to a call six years ago died Saturday morning, authorities said.

Officer Jordan Wingate died from his injuries surrounded by his family and friends, including his father, retired Oakland police Capt. Randell Wingate, based on OPD spokesman Paul Chambers.

The 29-year-old is the fifty fifth Oakland officer to die from injuries sustained within the line of duty, OPD said.

“Officer Wingate was a true hero who dedicated his life to the betterment of our community,” Chambers said in a press release Saturday, adding that he “embodied the highest ideals of law enforcement.”

Wingate, who was born in Walnut Creek in February 1995, graduated from the department's 176th Police Academy in May 2017. He was the valedictorian of his class after serving as a police cadet in Oakland for 3 years. The Oakland Police Officers Association recognized Wingate as its 2018 Rookie of the Year.

On August 13, 2018, police said he was driving to research a report of suspicious people on the Port of Oakland.

Shortly before 3 a.m., he collided with a automotive coming out of Berths 55 and 56 on the harbor within the 1900 block of Middle Harbor Road. Police said the impact caused his patrol SUV to then ram a parked large truck.

After the hearth department freed him from the vehicle, the then 22-year-old was taken to hospital in critical condition. Wingate was operated on and treated for serious injuries on the time.

Police said details of Wingate's services will probably be released once arrangements are finalized.
