Red Sox place Brayan Bello on the 15-day injured list

The Red Sox announced that starting pitcher Bryan Bello was placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday for what the team called a “right lat strain.”

The change applies retroactively to April twenty first. Right-hander Zack Kelly was called up from Boston's Triple-A affiliate to take Bello's place.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora WEEI said that the team is holding Bello back as a precaution after he felt tension following his last start on April 19.

The 24-year-old Bello is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in five starts to this point in 2024. Bello's loss adds to the already long list of Boston players currently injured. Cora noted in his radio interview that starter Nick Pivetta is moving closer to a possible rehab start, while Garrett Whitlock's condition is improving after he was also placed on the IL with an oblique bench injury.

The Red Sox began the season 13-11 despite early injury problems. Boston faces the Guardians within the second of a three-game series tonight at 6:10 p.m. in Cleveland.
