Days after the fatal shooting in Hayward, the body was found hidden

The shooting occurred within the early evening hours of April 26 near San Antonio and Hayman streets, Hayward police said in a news release Friday.

Witnesses told authorities that the shooting stemmed from an argument, but they didn’t initially call 911 or police, although they believed the victim had died, in line with police.

The shooting was reported to police two days later. Although officers found evidence of a shooting, they didn’t find any victims on the scene or in surrounding hospitals, police said.

Police identified an individual of interest within the case and determined he had a warrant for his arrest.

On April 30, officers found the person in an SUV near Tennyson Road and Leidig Court. According to police, he fled from officers and barricaded himself within the garage of an occupied home within the 29000 block of Chance Street.

Two residents were in a position to leave the house when officers arrived on the scene, police said. Officers eventually lured the person out of the garage and took him into custody.

Later that very same day, officers found a body near the crime scene with apparent gunshot wounds. According to police, it was hidden under dirt and debris.

“The man is believed to have been dead for several days,” police said within the news release.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office will release the person's identity once it has been confirmed and his next of kin has been notified.

The death was the fourth homicide in the town this yr.

The suspect – identified as Andres Sanchez, 38, of Hayward – was booked into the county jail on murder, burglary and evasion charges, in addition to warrants.
