Driver killed in wrong-way crash on Highway 101

The two-vehicle crash occurred around 11:15 a.m. north of Blossom Hill Road, the CHP said in a news release.

According to the CHP, the driving force of a Honda sedan drove from Blossom Hill Road into the southbound lanes of Highway 101 after which headed north within the flawed direction.

At one point, the Honda collided head-on with a tractor-trailer traveling south, the CHP said.

The driver of the Honda was ejected from his sedan and landed in the middle barrier, where he was pronounced dead about quarter-hour later, in keeping with the CHP.

The CHP identified the driving force as a 22-year-old man from San Jose. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office will release his full identity once it’s confirmed and his next of kin have been notified.

The CHP said diesel fuel leaked from the damaged semi-trailer and flowed into the middle divider. Firefighters from San Jose and employees of the California Department of Transportation prevented the oil slick from spreading further.

According to the CHP, the 2 left lanes of southbound Highway 101 are expected to stay closed during afternoon traffic for investigation and cleanup.
