SUNNYVALE – A motorist was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence after one other accident shortly before hitting a girl traveling on Highway 101, in response to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision was first reported at 1:27 a.m. Sunday within the southbound lane behind Mathilda Avenue near Sunnyvale. CHP Officer Ross Lee said a girl driving a gray Honda Civic had a Nissan

At some point, the Honda driver got out of her automotive and commenced walking south on the roadway between the 2 leftmost lanes, Lee said.

She was then struck by a gray Mazda CX-5 sport utility vehicle that was also traveling south. Lee said the Honda driver, identified as a girl in her 50s who has yet to be formally identified by the Santa Clara County coroner, died on the scene.

A subsequent investigation resulted within the DUI arrest of the Mazda driver, whom the CHP described as a 23-year-old woman from San Jose. Neither she nor the Nissan driver were injured in the primary crash, Lee said.

It stays unclear why the Honda driver hit the Nissan; Lee only confirmed that she was traveling at high speed when she hit the vehicle that was also moving.
