Frontier Airlines is moving away from the ultra-low-cost ticket model

Frontier Airlines, known for deeply discounted ticket prices and simple service, is adding latest fare categories that include carry-on bags, seat selection and no cancellation fees to appeal to U.S. travelers who want more upscale options on their flight.

Frontier, a unit of Frontier Group Holdings Inc., now offers 4 fare and repair categories of Basic, Economy, Premium and Business with various advantages, the airline said in an announcement Friday. It may even reduce change and cancellation fees for all fares all the way down to the bottom tier of basic fares, improve live telephone support for passengers, and extend the expiration time for flight credits to at least one yr.

Fares for the economy option start at $30 greater than the essential category, with the premium option costing at the very least $50 more and the business option costing $100 more, Frontier said.

Deep fare discounters have thrived for years with rapid growth and low operating costs that allowed them to generate profits from fees for extras like coffee or bottled water on flights, printed boarding passes and carry-on luggage. Such “additional costs” often exceeded the ticket price.

Frontier's latest pricing options at the moment are only available on Frontier's website. They might be added to the mobile app in the long run. New Business and Premium categories that provide more legroom only apply to the primary two rows of Frontier aircraft. Business fares feature the airline's UpFront Plus seating, which blocks the center seat in each of those rows.
