Girl dies in consequence of suspected DUI accident

Three other children, ages 8, 7 and 4, were also injured within the collision. They were treated and released from area hospitals, said Brooks Jarosz, spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

According to Jarosz, the 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. on May 1. The county coroner's office will release her identity once it has been confirmed and her next of kin has been notified.

The accident occurred on April 27 around 6:15 p.m. near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards.

The driver of a silver Mazda pickup collided with one other vehicle and hit a utility pole. The 4 children who were on the sidewalk on the time were also hit.

The driver – identified as a 38-year-old man from Cupertino – was arrested and brought to county jail on a charge of driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury.

Jarosz said the sheriff's office is waiting for the suspect's toxicology report.

“Once the investigation is completed, the information will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review,” Jarosz said.

Anyone with information in regards to the case can contact the sheriff's office's Traffic Investigative Division at 408-868-6600 or the anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
