Mountain lion caught on camera roaming around Milpitas

The first sighting occurred around 2 a.m. at Friendly Village Mobile Home Estates, 120 Dixon Landing Road, Milpitas police said in a social media post.

Police said a surveillance camera took the animal on the west side of the park, near the BART tracks.

Officers searched the world but were unable to locate the animal. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Santa Clara County Vector Control were notified of the sighting.

A second sighting occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Fairmeadow Way, police said. Surveillance materialt showed the mountain lion jumping over a closed wood gate.

Police urged residents in areas where the mountain lions have been spotted to be vigilant and control their surroundings. In addition, small pets needs to be brought indoors when unattended and kept on a leash when walked.

Residents who encounter a mountain lion should neither approach nor run away from the animal, police said. Instead, they need to try to look larger than the mountain lion by waving their arms and speaking in a loud, firm voice.

“These behaviors can cause the mountain lion to view you as a threat and leave the area,” police said.

Police urged residents to report further sightings of cougars by calling 911.
