Now Nvidia is signaling to its investors that the shoppers who spend billions of dollars on its chips can even earn money with artificial intelligence. This concern has been on the corporate's mind for a very long time because customers can only spend a lot on infrastructure before they need to make a profit.
If Nvidia's chips deliver a powerful and sustainable return on investment, it suggests the AI boom can proceed whilst it moves beyond the early stages of development and firms begin planning longer-term projects.
Nvidia’s most significant customers for its graphics processors are the key cloud providers — Amazon Internet services, Microsoft Azure blue, Google cloud and oracle Cloud. They accounted for a “mid-40%” of Nvidia's $22.56 billion in data center revenue within the April quarter, the corporate said.
There's also a more moderen generation of specialised GPU data center startups that buy Nvidia's GPUs, install them in server racks, load them into data centers, connect them to the Internet, after which rent them out to customers by the hour.
For example, CoreWeave, a GPU cloud, currently charges $4.25 per hour to rent an Nvidia H100. This sort of server time is required in large quantities to coach a big language model like OpenAI's GPT, and that's why many AI developers find yourself turning to Nvidia hardware.
After Nvidia delivered a better-than-expected earnings report on Wednesday, Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress told investors that cloud providers delivered an “immediate and strong return on investment.” She said if a cloud provider spends $1 on Nvidia hardware, it may possibly rent it out for $5 over the subsequent 4 years.
Kress also said that newer Nvidia hardware would have an excellent stronger return on investment, pointing to the corporate's HDX H200 product, which mixes 8 GPUs and access Metas Lama AI model, as an alternative of raw access to a cloud computer.
“This means that for every $1 spent on NVIDIA HDX H200 servers at current prices, an API provider providing Llama-3 tokens can generate $7 in revenue over four years,” Kress said.

Meta's server cluster is an example of “essential infrastructure for AI production,” Huang said, or “what we call AI factories.”
Nvidia also surprised analysts with an aggressive timeline for its next-generation GPU called Blackwell, which will be available in data centers in the fiscal fourth quarter. These comments were reassuring Fear of a slowdown while companies wait for the latest technology.
The first customers of the new chips include Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, Teslaand Elon Musk's xAI, Huang said.
Nvidia shares rose 6% in prolonged trading, topping $1,000 for the primary time. In addition to announcing earnings, Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split after the corporate's stock price rose 25-fold over the past five years.
