The eastbound lanes on the Bay Bridge were closed as crews put out grass fires

Officials closed the eastbound lanes of the Bay Bridge for 2 hours Saturday afternoon while crews battled a grass fire that broke out along Interstate 80.

As of 4:30 p.m., three of the five lanes on the bridge between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island had reopened.

The fire began on a hill on Yerba Buena Island around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. San Francisco Fire Department boats responded to the scene and started fighting the fireplace shortly thereafter.

Motorists should avoid Interstate 80 and take alternative routes, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed all eastbound lanes for an hour and a half to assist firefighters access a water source on the left side of the bridge. The fire is on the correct side.

During the closure, many individuals got out of their cars and walked along the bridge or took a nap behind the wheel, drivers there said.

Kalvin Alvarez was on his strategy to the Luke Combs concert in Santa Clara with two friends when traffic on the Bay Bridge slowed after which got here to an entire stop.

“All lanes are full,” Alvarez said Saturday afternoon as cars behind him began honking. “It’s like the La La Land scene on the highway overpass.”
