This summer, Stephen Curry will travel to Paris alongside the likes of LeBron James and Kevin Durant to win an Olympic gold medal, one in every of the few pieces of hardware he doesn't own. As Curry travels abroad in a number of weeks, one in every of his most famous hobbies will take a back seat.
Curry announced in a press release Tuesday afternoon that he is not going to compete within the 2024 American Century Championship, a celeb golf tournament in mid-July, foregoing the possibility to win back-to-back titles in pursuit of international sporting success.
“I am disappointed that I will not be able to defend my title at the American Century Championship in Tahoe this summer, but the chance to represent my country and hopefully win an Olympic gold medal for the first time at the 2024 Games in Paris is one Opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up,” Curry said in a press release. “I look forward to returning to the shores of Lake Tahoe and making more memories next July and in the years to come. In the meantime, I know Dell and Seth will represent the Curry family well in my absence, but if one of them doesn't come home with another trophy for our mantel, I'll be very disappointed!”
Curry had no shortage of moments of brilliance en path to winning the 2023 championship, the highlight being a 152-yard hole-in-one. He became the primary African-American champion within the tournament's 35-year history and the primary lively athlete to win since Al Del Greco of the Tennessee Titans in 2000.
“Well, we've found that the one thing Stephen Curry can't do is be in two places at once,” Jon Miller, president of acquisitions and partnerships at NBC Sports, said in a press release, wishing Curry and Team USA Good luck to Paris and points to Curry returning for the 2025 tournament.
Following a practice round on Wednesday and the Celebrity-Am on Thursday, the tournament runs July 12-14 and features 84 athletes and entertainers, including Seth and Dell Curry, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and Charles Woodson.
Curry has three gold medals on his resume on the 2014 FIBA Men's World Cup, 2010 FIBA Men's World Cup and 2007 Global Games, in addition to a silver medal on the 2007 FIBA Men's U19 World Cup, but this summer can be his first time doing so The 36-year-old will participate within the Olympic Games. In addition to Curry, James and Durant, Team USA, coached by Steve Kerr, will include Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, Bam Adebayo and Jrue Holiday.
