What we all know in regards to the two officers injured in Thursday's shooting

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Police Officers Association released the names of the 2 officers who were shot Thursday evening while responding to a domestic violence call at a south San Jose hotel.

In an email to its members, the union said Officer Jamie Arredondo underwent a second surgery on Friday without complications. Arredondo, who had just accomplished his first 12 months on the police force, underwent his first surgery Thursday evening and was in stable condition.

“His recovery continues,” the union wrote in the e-mail.

The police union identified the opposite officer as Joseph Desroches, who has been with SJPD for 3 and a half years. He was released after being treated at a hospital for an apparent abrasion.

The two officers responded to a call from a lady concerned that a person she had a restraining order against was heading to Extended Stay America on San Ignacio Avenue, where she lived along with her three children.

But the person – later identified as 33-year-old Kevin Briones – wasn't there when police arrived and so they left. Briones reportedly showed up around 10:30 p.m. and the girl called the hotel front desk to report a disturbance, which was relayed to police dispatchers.

Desroches and Arredondo met Briones in a hallway on the hotel and ordered him to remain where he was, police said. Briones allegedly reached right into a duffel bag he was carrying. When officers told him to stop, he pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired on the officers, hitting them each, San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said Friday.

Officers returned fire, striking Briones as he ran down the hallway and jumped through a third-story window. He then crawled to a Residence Inn hotel round the corner, where officers found him, police said. Briones was arrested and brought to the hospital.

According to authorities, Arredondo was hit multiple times. Desroches pulled him to safety and applied a tourniquet before realizing he, too, had been hit, the police chief said.

San Jose cops haven’t been shot within the line of duty since Aug. 16, when a female officer responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex within the Sunol-Midtown area was ambushed and shot within the stomach by a person involved within the incident underneath her protective vest. The suspected shooter was later charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.
