  • This is how NBA draft experts rated the Celtics’ choice of Baylor Scheierman

Before the Celts chosen him with the number 30 pick within the 2024 NBA Draft, Baylor Scheierman Set the Nebraska State Record for many passing yards (3,924) and touchdowns (59) in a season as a highschool quarterback.

His football skills have helped prepare him for the court. Scheierman was named a First-Team All-Big East selection last season and averaged 18.5 points, 9 rebounds and three.9 assists per game.

“I think that obviously plays a big role,” Scheierman said. “The quarterback in football – you have to know everything that's happening on the field. You have to know what routes the receivers are running. You have to know what the defense looks like. You have to know what routes certain defenses are beating. You have to know everything and it happens so fast.”

“Basketball is pretty much the same,” he added, “in terms of my game, my ability to see the court and anticipate things before they happen, and then my ability to throw the ball in a timely and accurate manner. I think playing football has definitely helped me develop that on the basketball court.”

Scheierman played the primary three years of his college basketball profession at South Dakota State before transferring to Creighton. He transferred because he desired to challenge himself and show that he could play in a giant league.

“South Dakota State is a great program and I still respect the people there and have a lot of relationships with them,” Scheierman said. “My three years there were just incredible. After my junior year, going through the NBA draft process and getting feedback, I felt like I needed to step up and challenge myself again.”

Scheierman said he was coaching for the Celtics in 2022. This time, Scheierman was their selection due to his improved play and experience at a better level of school basketball.

He said he was looking forward to attending to work and helping the Celtics win in any way he could.

“I was really excited towards the end of the first round,” Scheierman said. “I got the call when the Celtics were still under pressure. As soon as I got the call, I was super excited.”

“It was an honor to be selected by this organization that just won an NBA title, an organization that doesn't just pick anybody to play on their team. They felt like they felt confident enough to select me and that I could come in and impact the team in any way I could and try to help them continue the culture that they've already established.”
