Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 could boost box office

One major success was missing on the box office: family movies.

A handful of kid-friendly hits — Universals Super Mario Bros. is considered one of the important reasons ticket sales have been boosted. But many family movies either premiered on streaming platforms as an alternative of on the massive screen after the pandemic, or were released to this point apart within the calendar that the momentum of ticket sales soon evaporated.

In recent months, increasingly more family-friendly movies have been released in theaters, each constructing on the success of the previous one, boosting box office and giving theater owners hope for a greater second half of the yr. Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 made a very big splash, grossing $155 million in its opening weekend – a feat that helped restore the animation studio's popularity within the industry after a dry spell.

“Momentum is a huge factor” in ticket sales, said Chris Johnson, CEO of Classic Cinemas, a Midwestern movie show chain.

So far, domestic box office revenues in 2024 are down 23% year-over-year and 40% below 2019, currently at $3.08 billion, based on Comscore.

More kid-friendly hits, just like the upcoming Despicable Me 4, may very well be the important thing to the box office's recovery.

The genre of “family-friendly” movies is broad. The definition even varies amongst cinema analysts. Some say the rating of the film is the criterion, while others say it relies on the content of the film itself.

“Family movies come in all shapes and sizes,” says Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory. “We as observers sometimes limit the description to cartoons or movies with a certain age rating or those that are literally about a family of characters. But they encapsulate a variety of stories.”

Robbins identified that family movies are sometimes superhero flicks, adventure movies with real actors and comedies.

“Think about how many families it took to make Star Wars, the Marvel Universe, 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'Barbie' so big,” he said. “The key is what is friendly, accessible and understandable to as many demographics as possible.”

Comscore's Paul Dergarabedian explains his summer box office predictions

So while some families who’ve seen “Inside Out 2” may additionally have seen Universal's “Twisters” or Warner Bros.' “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is a family-friendly offering due out later this yr, others may go for Sony's “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” Paramount “Transformers One” or “The Wild Robot” from Universal. The highly anticipated “Moana 2” comes out on Thanksgiving and a 3rd “Sonic” film hits theaters in December.

“No matter how you define it, the family film genre was arguably hit harder than any other by the pandemic, as parents were understandably hesitant to go to a movie theater at the height of this unfortunate situation,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Fast forward to 2024: Family films were the undeniable bright spot in a very challenging summer.”

Before the pandemic, greater than two dozen family movies were released in 2019. Disney's “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Toy Story 4” and “Frozen II” accounted for 4 of the highest ten highest-grossing movies of the yr.

In 2020, fewer than a dozen family movies were released in theaters. Due to pandemic-related production shutdowns and two labor strikes in Hollywood, the number of latest releases is well below the 2019 level.

“2023 was actually a record year for us, but it could have been a lot better,” said Classic Cinemas' Johnson, noting the dearth of family-friendly offerings. “You can't ignore the family audience and its importance.”

Much-needed momentum

Johnson said he felt “reenergized” after the premiere of “Inside Out 2.”

The film grossed one other $22.2 million on Monday, 14% of the weekend's total and the second-best Monday ever for a Pixar film.

While it was obvious there was an appetite for the sequel, Johnson noted that it benefited from the recent releases of Outstanding's “IF,” which opened with $33 million, and Sony“Garfield: The Movie” grossed $24 million at its opening.

Families attending screenings of those movies likely saw posters and cardboard cutouts promoting the upcoming release of Inside Out 2, and doubtless also a trailer for the film as a part of the theater's film information package.

“'Inside Out 2' was certainly a standalone thing and would do well,” Johnson said. “But I think those opening credits helped. I think the box office momentum and the similar genre [have an] impact and I can't wait to see that carry over into Despicable Me 4.”

Despicable Me 4 is ready to hit theaters on July 3 and is predicted to gross between $60 million and $80 million in its debut, based on data from Comscore, roughly according to previous installments within the franchise. Dergarabedian agreed that the success of Inside Out 2 could boost Despicable Me 4's potential.
