A person was shot and at the very least five people were stabbed in a big brawl on the shores of Lake Berryessa Saturday night, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said.
On Saturday evening, the police didn’t reveal the name of the dead man or his place of residence.
“There were several victims who were stabbed,” said Henry Wofford, spokesman for the sheriff's office. “We don't have an exact number at this time. To my knowledge, there are certainly more than five who were stabbed.”
Two individuals with stab wounds were flown by helicopter to local hospitals in serious condition, Wofford said. Other stabbing victims were driven to hospitals by friends or relations, he added.
“We are actually in the hospital emergency rooms … looking for witnesses and victims,” Wofford said at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, adding that officers were still on site and speaking with witnesses.
Investigators haven’t yet determined what sparked the fight or how many individuals were involved, Wofford said. “I can't tell you if it was a pack or if there were four different groups fighting at the same time,” he said. “There's a possibility there was more than one initial altercation.”
The Oak Shores day-use area on the west side of Lake Berryessa – where highs of 86 degrees Fahrenheit were recorded Saturday – is free to access and gets very crowded when the weather is good, Wofford said.
Because of the “magnitude and nature” of the incident, the sheriff's office is being assisted within the investigation by the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force, which incorporates Napa police and the Napa County District Attorney's Office, Wofford said.
“We'll be working through the night,” Wofford said. “The investigation is still in its early stages.”
