NEW YORK (AP) — Alicia Keys caused a sensation on the Tony Awards on Sunday when she sang her hit “Empire State of Mind” with superstar Jay-Z and belted out a hip-hop love letter to their hometown of New York in the beginning of the show.
Keys took to the piano onstage at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater because the solid of her semi-autobiographical musical “Hell's Kitchen” performed a medley of songs, then began singing her and Jay-Z's 2009 hit. She then left the stage to walk a number of steps inside with the rapper to thunderous applause.
Host Ariana DeBose opened the show with an original acrobatic number and Jeremy Strong took home the primary big award of the night as Broadway's biggest party opened its arms to hip-hop and rock fans.
