Police discover Fremont police officer who shot and injured automotive theft suspect

Jonathan Laforteza joined the Fremont Police Department nearly a 12 months ago and has two years of law enforcement experience, the police department said in a news release.

The suspect, a 31-year-old man from Fremont, is in stable condition, police said.

The Shoot followed a carjacking around 9 a.m. Sunday within the car parking zone of a business within the 44000 block of Osgood Road. Police said the suspect was armed with a knife and left the realm before officers arrived.

A short while later, an officer found an individual matching the suspect's description walking on Auto Mall Parkway west of Osgood Road. He was still armed.

When he was asked to stop, the suspect pointed the knife on the officer and “walked toward him,” in response to police.

“Despite numerous requests to stop and although the officer changed his position to create space and distance, the suspect continued to approach the officer with the knife in his hand,” police said.

The officer opened fire, hitting the suspect once. The suspect was then transported to a close-by hospital.

The police crimes against the person division is investigating the incident.

According to police, cases will probably be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in the approaching days to file charges against the suspect.
