Police shoot person after reporting automobile theft

FREMONT – Police shot and wounded a carjacking suspect Sunday morning, authorities said.

According to Fremont police, officers were called to a parking zone within the 44000 block of Osgood Road, near Automall Parkway, around 9 a.m. for a report of a automobile theft. Records show that block is home to the Skyway Plaza shopping mall, which also features a Walmart.

Officers were told the suspect – described by police in a news release Sunday only as an adult – was carrying a knife and had left the scene before police arrived.

But moments later, officers spotted an individual matching the outline of the suspect given on the crime scene on Automall Parkway west of Osgood Road.

At one point, an officer shot and injured the person, but police didn’t release details about how the shooting occurred. Fremont police said within the statement that they plan to release more information “in the coming days.”

The injured man was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, police said. None of the officers were injured.
