What’s open and closed on Juneteenth 2024?

While Juneteenth celebrations are the main target within the Bay Area, the actual holiday could also be just a little quieter, as several public services can be closed on the day.

Juneteenth is widely known on June 19 and commemorates the tip of slavery in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, the date officially became a federal holiday. For this reason, many government services are closed.

The United States Postal Service confirmed that every one post offices will remain closed on Wednesday. However, UPS and FedEx said their branches will remain open and pickup and delivery services can be available.

The Federal Reserve, the New York Stock Exchange and most bank branches can even be closed on Juneteenth, including Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, Citibank, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase.

Social Security and DMV offices in California can even remain closed on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, Juneteenth isn’t a paid holiday for a lot of California state employees. CalMatters reported last yr that Employees must take day off for Juneteenth as one in all their 4 personal holidays. However, some offices, corresponding to the State Treasurer's office, remain closed on this holiday.

Most public transportation can even be open. Both BART and Caltrain will operate at regular hours on weekdays. The Valley Transportation Authority's River Oaks lobby can be closed Wednesday, but its office at Downtown Center can be open at regular hours. VTA buses and light-weight rail are also expected to operate at regular hours.

In the East Bay, AC Transit will follow a Sunday schedule on Juneteenth, the agency said.

Finally, most privately owned grocery stores, retail stores and restaurants can be open on Wednesday.
