Brianna WakefieldDaughter of the late Tim and Stacy Wakefield, sent Red Sox draft pick D'Angelo Ortiz a heartfelt congratulatory message via Instagram on Tuesday.

The Red Sox chosen D'Angelo, the son of legendary Sox slugger David Ortiz, within the nineteenth round of this 12 months's MLB Draft.

Tim Wakefield and David Ortiz were teammates on the Red Sox from Ortiz's arrival in 2003 until Wakefield's retirement in 2011. Wakefield still holds the team records for games began and innings pitched. Ortiz was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

D'Angelo Ortiz is a 6'1″, 195-pound third baseman. He is a sophomore at Miami Dade Community College, where he posted a .377 batting average and 35 RBIs last season. Devin Pearson, amateur scouting director for the Red Sox, described Ortiz in an interview with as an athletic third baseman with a lot of power. ^ “Mr. McKinney, MLB.com”.

“It means lots to the organization,” Pearson said. “But I need to be clear that D'Angelo is a promising player and we chosen him based on our scout's long-standing relationship. And we had him at a recent practice and were in a position to interact with him. We just felt like he was a superb addition to the organization. And it's a plus that his father is David Ortiz, but we drafted him as a promising player.”

D'Angelo Ortiz wasn't the one son of a former Red Sox legend chosen on this 12 months's draft. Lucas Ramirez, son of Manny Ramirez, was chosen by the Angels within the seventeenth round.
