Elon Musk said on X on Tuesday that he would move the headquarters of SpaceX and the social media platform formerly often known as Twitter to Texas – citing several criticisms he has of California and doing business in San Francisco.
Citing a brand new state law that prohibits teachers from informing families of their students' gender identity changes, Musk tweeted that he would move SpaceX's headquarters from Hawthorne in Los Angeles County to the corporate's launch site in Texas.
The move can be a blow to Southern California, where SpaceX has helped construct a burgeoning space economy.
“This is the straw that broke the camel’s back,” tweeted Musk shortly after noon. “Because of this law and many others before it that attacked both families and businesses, SpaceX will now move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
The law that the SpaceX founder cited was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday following a bitter dispute between conservative school officials concerned about parents' rights and LGBTQ+ activists concerned about at-risk youth.
Shortly thereafter, Musk tweeted that he would also move Xformerly often known as Twitter, from San Francisco to Austin, noting that he was “sick of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building.”
