Fox News has invited Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to a debate on Sept. 17 in Pennsylvania, in response to copies of the letters obtained by CNBC.
The invitation comes a day after Trump said he was able to debate Harristhe newly elected de facto candidate of the Democrats, several times in a phone call with reporters.
Fox News suggested that its political anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum moderate the talk. The company said it was “open to discussion” concerning the exact terms of the talk, including the date, format, location and whether an audience can be present in person.
Harris and Trump's campaign teams didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment on whether or not they would accept the invitation.
For Democrats, the talk can be a chance to make amends after President Joe Biden's disastrous performance at the talk in June.
Another debate between Biden and Trump was scheduled for September 10, to be broadcast by ABC News, however the president dropped out of the race on Sunday amid growing concerns across the Democratic Party about his age and fitness.
Although Trump said at Tuesday's press conference that he was now able to debate Harris, he added that he “doesn't like the idea of ABC.” The former president commonly praises Fox News.
In the times since Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris as his successor, the vp has gained ground on Trump in early polls and raked in record donations.
So far, the Trump team, which has funded a campaign against Biden in recent months, has tried to portray Harris as merely one other face of the identical opponent.
“I want to debate her and she will be no different because they have the same policies,” Trump said Tuesday.
