Morning sports update
Nick Pivetta's performance within the Red Sox's recent win: With a 6-5 win over the Marlins on Thursday, the Red Sox reached an eight-game record above .500 for the primary time in 2024.
Even though the sport was way more dramatic in the long run – it took 12 innings for the Red Sox to finally win – starter Nick Pivetta set the tone early on.
Pivetta, 31, went 6.2 hitless innings before Miami finally broke through, ending the night with seven scoreless innings (allowing only one hit and two walks) and striking out 10 players.
“Pivetta was outstanding today,” said Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. “He gave us a lot of trouble.”

In addition, he used his “sweeper” pitch to great effect, achieving a swing-and-miss rate of fifty percent.
The performance was especially positive for Pivetta after a rough outing in his last start, a 9-2 loss to the Padres by which he allowed five runs in 4 innings. He attributed his success Thursday partly to the sweeper's continued development.
“I did a great job in my bullpen [sessions]was capable of form of get the pitch back,” he said. “It's a tough pitch and it's still recent to me, so I used to be capable of make a couple of adjustments to it today and use it sparingly and it turned out rather well.”

The Red Sox, as mentioned above, earned a 6-5 victory over the Marlins in 12 innings on Thursday, completing a three-game sweep of Miami.
Boston begins an important test against the Yankees tonight at 7:05 p.m. in New York
On Saturday, the Revolution will face the Sounders in Seattle at 10:30 p.m.
