Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story hopes to play again in 2024

Trevor Story hopes to play for the Red Sox again this 12 months.

The 31-year-old didn’t rule out a return in 2024 in a conversation with reporters on Friday. Story underwent shoulder surgery just over three months ago. After the surgery, the team announced that he could be out for six months.

“We are currently having discussions about it,” Story said when asked about the potential of playing again this season. based on Alex Speier. “It's too early to say if that's going to happen or not, but I always keep in mind that if I have a chance to play in the playoffs, that's why I came to Boston.

“I believe we're being very conscientious concerning the process, we're being respectful and we're not doing anything that my body doesn't say yes to. It's too early to say, but in fact it will be great if I could.”

The shortstop's 2024 season ended abruptly on April 5 against the Los Angeles Angels when he suffered a shoulder injury after diving to his left to stop a ground ball. Story was looking forward to playing a full season again, having missed most of 2023 while recovering from a torn right UCL.

Instead, as a member of the Red Sox, he suffered another serious illness, this time after just eight games in the year.

There was general despondency following Story's latest injury, with Boston hoping for the player's first full, healthy season since signing him ahead of the 2022 season.

The team has already lost several key players to injuries, even though the season had barely begun. Newly signed starting pitcher Lucas Giolito underwent elbow surgery in March, newly signed second baseman Vaughn Grissom was sidelined for an extended period before making his debut with a hamstring injury, and Rafael Devers missed games during the Red Sox's first series of the season due to persistent shoulder problems. Then, a few days before Story's surgery, Nick Pivetta landed on the injured list with an elbow strain.

Nevertheless, Boston quickly exceeded expectations and continued to win, despite the serious injuries the team had to deal with at the beginning. Rookie Ceddanne Rafaela played 48 games as shortstop and played above-average offensively and defensively in Story's place.

If Boston makes the playoffs and continues into October, it sounds like Story would like to play if the team's medical staff allows him to. After his recent injury, he explained the frustration He felt like he couldn't contribute as much as he had hoped as a member of the Red Sox.

Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston in March 2022. He has yet to play 100 games in a season for the team and has only appeared in 145 games since joining the team.

Since Rafaela may also play center field, the Red Sox could easily use Story as a shortstop if the team deems him fit to field.
