The Giants announced on Sunday evening that they’ve traded outfielder Austin Slater to the Cincinnati Reds for a financial transfer fee. He will now receive the cash in exchange for former Giants left-handed pitcher Alex Young. This ends Slater's ten-year tenure with the Giants.
Young, 30, was subsequently sent to Triple-A Sacramento. The Giants haven’t yet announced who will take Slater's place on the lively roster.
Slater, 31, was chosen by the Giants within the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Stanford and has spent his entire skilled profession within the San Francisco organization. Before his trade, Slater was the longest-tenured Giant on the lively roster. In eight major league seasons with the Giants, Slater posted a .254 batting average and a .736 OPS with 39 home runs, 47 steals and 162 RBIs.
The experienced outfielder was a solid hitter for many of his profession (106 OPS+ from 2017 to 2023), but is within the midst of the worst offensive season of his profession. In 43 games, Slater has career-worst batting average (.200), slugging percentage (.244), and OPS (.575). In his final 10 games before his trade, Slater had a .154 batting average and .457 OPS. These numbers are partly as a consequence of injuries; after spending most of spring training recovering from right elbow surgery, Slater was placed on the injured list in mid-May as a consequence of a concussion.
Young has played in parts of six major league seasons and has a profession ERA of 4.40 with 226 strikeouts in 264 innings. In 2022, the Giants acquired Young in a trade from the Guardians for a money sum. In San Francisco, the left-hander posted a 2.39 ERA in 26 1/3 innings with 20 strikeouts.
After that season, he left the club as a free agent and signed with the Reds.
In 2023, Young recorded an ERA of three.86 and 4.99 FIP over 53 2/3 innings with Cincinnati, totaling 50 strikeouts, 20 walks and allowing 10 home runs. The left-hander began the season on the injured list as a consequence of a lower back injury and has appeared in only three major league games this season, allowing no runs in two innings. In 23 games with the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, Young has a 1.19 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings.
