Women need more sleep than men, studies show – The Mercury News

It seems there could also be a scientific reason why women need more “beauty sleep.” Studies show that, on average, women need about 11 minutes more sleep per night than men. While this difference could seem small, it could possibly have a major impact on overall health and well-being.

Research is restricted, however the causes point to hormones, in keeping with the Sleep Foundation. Women experience a rollercoaster of hormonal changes throughout their lives – from menstruation to pregnancy to menopause. Each of those phases can disrupt sleep patterns. Women are also 40% more prone to suffer from insomnia than men.

“When it comes to physiology, a woman’s hormones play a big role in sleep,” said Dr. Aileen Alexander, women’s health and sleep expert Glamour Magazine“Overall, we can conclude that women have a greater need for sleep and are more likely to take a nap in the afternoon.”

In addition to biological aspects, societal expectations and obligations also contribute to women's sleep needs. According to Glamour, research has shown that ladies often tackle nearly all of household and caregiving responsibilities, resulting in increased fatigue and stress. “Women are usually the ones who stay up all night caring for the children or, in some cases, the elderly parents,” Alexander said. This added pressure may require more sleep to get well and maintain optimal cognitive function.

However, individual sleep needs can vary from individual to individual, no matter gender. Factors comparable to age, lifestyle and general health all contribute to an individual's optimal sleep duration.

“While more research is needed to understand gender differences and the sleep needs and cycles of men and women, the consequences of sleep deprivation are well documented and can have tremendous impacts for both men and women,” Alexander said.

To get the needed rest, Experts recommend Adults sleep between seven and nine hours an evening. If you continue to aren't getting enough sleep, discuss with your doctor.
