Drake Mayes' NFL preseason debut lasted only one series on Thursday night against the Panthers.

Maye was taken out of the sport after seven snaps, most of which were running plays. He finished the sport 2 of three for 19 yards.

Coach Jerod Mayo told reporters that the plan before the sport was to start out Maye and Brissett one series each. He later said he planned to make use of Maye more often this Thursday against the Eagles.

“This is honestly a big week for everybody to practice against the Eagles and then we'll see how the reps break down in the game,” Mayo said. “But I expect Drake to get more reps than he did in the first game.”

Mayo said after the sport that he desired to lock in Maye's playing time within the starting offensive line group, which impacted Maye's playing time on Thursday.

“When he's in, you want him in the starting offensive line,” Mayo said after the sport. “We have to protect the guy. I'm not saying we don't have to protect the other guys, but that was definitely the case.”

On Friday morning, Mayo said the team remains to be in search of ways to enhance the offensive line.

“The offensive line is still a work in progress and I've said from day one that we're going to play with the best five, no matter what that combination looks like,” Mayo said. “We're always trying to get better. We're bringing some linemen in to practice (on Friday), so we're always trying to get better and improve that front. When it comes to winning football games, it all starts with the offensive line and the defensive line.”

The Patriots are still constructing their identity, which Mayo said will evolve right into a physical identity. Maye and his offensive line can be a component of that as they proceed to develop.

“We're a physical team and I think we showed that last night, at least that we try to be a physical team,” Mayo said. “I think the guys stepped up and ran to the ball and just played with real joy and excitement for the opportunity and those guys were happy for their teammates.”

“I hope the other teams see the passion and love for the game and that the guys go out there, fly around and play good football.”
