Galvin warns of text message scams ahead of Massachusetts primary elections

With primary elections approaching next week, state officials are warning voters about text message scams.

“Please do not click on links sent by unknown numbers,” the Secretary of State wrote on X. “If in doubt, check your registration on our website or call your local election office: VoteInMA.com

Secretary of State William Galvin told reporters that “numerous” local officials had reported cases of possible fraud, reportedSome voters in Middlesex County may receive text messages with a link suggesting they’re ineligible to vote in Tuesday's election.

A Wilmington resident was notified via text message that he was not registered to vote, Wilmington city officials said wrote on Facebook.

“The City Clerk’s Office and the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth will not text you regarding your voter registration status,” the town wrote.

Galvin said he doesn’t consider the text messages are from a selected candidate or race, however the messages could prompt individuals to disclose personal information.

“We just don't want people to accidentally give out information,” Galvin told the newspaper.

To check registration status, voters can contact their local election offices or check their status on the State website.

The deadline for voter registration has expired on 24 August to vote for largely uncontested state offices. Senator Elizabeth Warren is the one incumbent facing multiple Republican challengers. Ian Cain, John Deaton and Robert Antonellis are the one Republicans on the statewide ballot.
