Health | Study: USA has lowest life expectancy amongst wealthy English-speaking countries

A brand new study has found that Americans have the bottom life expectancy in comparison with comparable English-speaking countries.

The researchers from Penn State University The people answerable for the study compared death rates from 1990 to 2019 in six English-speaking countries and located that individuals in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand live longer on average than their American counterparts.

In the United States, the typical life expectancy for men is 76.5 years, while for girls it’s about 81.5 years. In Australia, nonetheless, women lived almost 4 years longer and men five years longer than within the United States.

The study also found that men and girls in California and Hawaii lived longer than other Americans – although not so long as Australians – while life expectancy for people within the Southeast is well below the U.S. average (72.6 years for girls, 69.3 years for men).

Unlike the United States, other English-speaking countries have strict gun laws, fewer smokers, and universal healthcare, all of which might lead to raised outcomes.

“One lesson we Americans can learn about life expectancy when we look at comparable countries is where the limit of best performance lies,” Jessica Hoassociate professor of sociology and demography at Penn State and lead creator of the study, said: “Yes, we are doing poorly, but this study shows what goals we can pursue. We know that these increases in life expectancy are actually achievable because other large countries have already done this.”
