4 years later, on January 6, 2025, Congress will receive additional security

When members of Congress meet on Capitol Hill to vote on the electoral votes in Presidential elections 2024the method, on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitolcan have the complete authority of the federal government behind his security.

The certification process on January 6, 2025 was designated a national security event of special significance last week by Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on the request of Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, in accordance with the U.S. Secret Service.

This designation is reserved for significant events — including the Super Bowl, presidential inaugurations and this summer's NATO summit — that require security on a big scale. Security for these events will include increased numbers of officers on site, wider security perimeters and using technology to detect potential material utilized in weapons of mass destruction. The FBI may even be involved in monitoring for any threats related to the event within the months leading as much as it.

The Secret Service, which manages event security under the NSSE designation, announced the choice on Wednesday, noting that various congressional reports, including the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack, had beneficial the designation.

The U.S. Capitol Police have been planning the 2025 certification because the attack on the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump in 2020, with a greater focus – including meetings and other planning exercises – over the past 12 months, a source accustomed to the planning told CNN.

Authorities say greater than 140 officers were injured within the Capitol riots, and the U.S. Attorney in Washington DC has to this point charged greater than 1,500 individuals with crimes related to the attack.

The Capitol Police Inauguration Task Force, which can be chargeable for security planning for Jan. 6, had already been sharing security plans with law enforcement partners similar to DC's Metropolitan Police Department and has now begun sharing those plans with federal partners as well, the source told CNN.

“National special security events are events of the highest national importance,” Eric Ranaghan, special agent in control of the us's Dignitary Protective Division, said in a press release announcing the designation.

Ranaghan continued, “The U.S. Secret Service, in collaboration with our federal, state, and local partners, is committed to developing and implementing a comprehensive and integrated security plan to ensure the safety of this event and its participants.”
