Driver charged with murder in wrong-way crash that killed mother and son

After being released from a medical facility on Thursday, Orlando resident Duncan McQuarrie was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of murder, intoxicated manslaughter, intoxicated manslaughter, intoxicated driving with personal injury, reckless driving and reckless driving with personal injury, California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said.

The fatal collision occurred on August 26 at around 3:40 p.m. within the northbound lanes of Highway 85 south of Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Prior to the crash, the CHP received reports of a 2024 Toyota Tacoma traveling the incorrect way. The driver – identified by the CHP as McQuarrie – collided head-on with a 2021 Tesla Model Y before officers could stop him, Lee said.

The occupants of the Tesla were pronounced dead on the scene. They were identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office as 47-year-old Rebecca Joanne Olsen and 14-year-old Charles George Olsen, each of San Jose.

Rebecca was originally from Australia and Charles was born within the United Kingdom, the boy's father, Cameron Olsen, said in a Social media post Days after the fatal collision. Both were enthusiastic world travelers and had lived in San Jose for 12 years.

Charles was a gifted child who took “enormous pride” in his knowledge of history and politics, his father said. He had just began his freshman 12 months at Summit Tahoma High School, where he had skipped a 12 months in math and Spanish classes.

“He was very special (and yes, I know most parents say that),” Cameron said. “He was my best friend, my travel companion and the only person who ever made me feel truly at home.”

Anyone with information concerning the case should contact the CHP office in San Jose at 408-961-0900.
