GREECE: Santa Cruz resident Rus Scott traveled to Crete in June for adventures, including a day trip from the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos (pictured) to the tiny island of Spinalonga, once a leper colony.

TRAVEL TIPS: Expect warm to hot weather, says Rus. “I wore linen, which is very cool. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk a lot. Have euros in small bills and coins on hand so you can buy something – a bottle of water is a good buy – when using the restroom in retail stores.”

ANTARCTIC: The current heat wave has José Antonio Rubio, a retired Catholic priest who lives at St. Mary Church in Gilroy, wistfully recalling the cruise he took to Antarctica in January. We saw numerous penguins, but, he says, “we weren't allowed to get too close to them.”

TRAVEL TIPS: “Attend all the lectures on the ship and take all the optional excursions to the continent – and make sure your cruise includes getting off the ship and going to Antarctica.” That’s not the case for everybody.
