Mass layoffs at Cisco and IBM destroy lots of of tech jobs within the Bay Area

SAN JOSE — Cisco Systems and IBM have decided to chop lots of of jobs within the Bay Area, a drastic measure that could be a grim reminder that downsizing within the technology industry is constant.

In total, well over 1,000 technology jobs might be lost within the Bay Area as a result of layoffs at Cisco, IBM and Advantest.

Here are the small print of the recent layoffs on the two tech giants and a smaller tech company, and the impact on Bay Area jobs:

— Cisco is cutting 842 jobs within the Bay Area. These layoffs include staff reductions that can affect 563 jobs in San Jose, 145 jobs in Milpitas and 134 jobs in San Francisco.

— IBM is cutting 112 jobs within the Bay Area. Of these, 58 jobs are in San Francisco and 54 on the IBM Silicon Valley Lab in Coyote Valley, south of San Jose.

– Advantest, a semiconductor testing company, is cutting 88 jobs in Fremont.

According to official WARN notices the businesses sent to the state Department of Employment Development, all layoffs were classified as everlasting.

The Cisco job cuts were scheduled to take effect on November 15. The IBM layoffs were scheduled for November 18. The Advantest layoffs were scheduled to take effect on November 22, based on WARN notices.

San Jose-based Cisco has cut 2,649 jobs within the Bay Area, including the newest round of cuts, in 2022, 2023 and 2024, based on this news organization's review of Cisco's WARN filings with the state EDD. The years are the time-frame for the waves of staff cuts within the tech sector within the wake of the coronavirus.

According to this news organization's evaluation of the corporate's WARN notices, IBM cut 165 jobs within the Bay Area through the same period between 2022 and 2024.

Shortly before Cisco announced its job cuts, the technology company announced it will cut seven percent of its workforce, which could equate to a lack of 5,900 jobs worldwide.
