San Jose police issue an arrest warrant for City Councilmember Omar Torres

SAN JOSE – Police have issued a search warrant for Councilman Omar Torres in reference to a criminal investigation, in line with multiple sources conversant in the matter.

On Thursday, officers stopped and arrested Torres and served him with an arrest warrant, sources told this news organization. It was not immediately clear what was sought within the warrant.

Details in regards to the nature and scope of the investigation were initially not known on Thursday.

Torres, the City Council's first openly gay Latino member, was elected in 2022 after serving as an advocate for youth and families and infrequently spoke about his difficult upbringing within the Washington district and the way it spurred him to grow to be more energetic in his community .

Before representing District 3, which covers much of downtown San Jose, he served on the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, the San Jose Unified School District, the Santa Maria Urban Ministry and as deputy chief of staff to former City Councilwoman Magdalena Carrasco, amongst other positions .

Torres also served on the Franklin McKinley School District board and was previously elected as a trustee for the San Jose-Evergreen Community College District. Torres was regional director of the California Democratic Party until last 12 months and recently attended the Democratic National Convention in Chicago as a delegate.
