Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized after she was injured while traveling with a congressional delegation in Luxembourg, her office said Friday.
Pelosi, 84, “sustained an injury while on official duty and was taken to the hospital for evaluation,” her spokesman Ian Krager said in an announcement Press release.
The Democratic speaker emeritus and current U.S. representative from California “is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said.
“She continues to work and regrets that she cannot take part in the remaining CODEL events,” he said.
The spokesperson didn’t immediately reply to CNBC's request for further details concerning the incident.
In a photograph shared by the US Embassy in Luxembourg Earlier Friday, Pelosi is seen standing and holding the hand of House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, who led the delegation.
In an X post later Friday, McCaul predicted that Pelosi would soon recuperate.
“I am disappointed that Speaker Emerita Pelosi will not be able to attend the remainder of our delegation’s events this weekend, knowing how much she was looking forward to honoring our veterans,” McCaul wrote.
“But she is strong and I am confident she will get back on her feet in no time. Praying for a speedy recovery, @SpeakerPelosi!”
The non-partisan, 18 members The delegation was scheduled to travel to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, when German and Allied forces clashed within the Ardennes region during World War II.
U.S. lawmakers were prepared to attend anniversary commemorations on Friday and Saturday “along with veterans and their families, active military personnel, government and military officials, and foreign dignitaries.” Pelosi's office said before the trip.
Krager said in Friday's statement that Pelosi “expresses her thanks and praise to our veterans and her gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in peace in Europe.”
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi had the personal and official honor of traveling with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II – including her Uncle Johnny,” the speaker said.
“She looks forward to returning to the U.S. soon,” he added.
