Leisure travel helps San Jose Airport zoom passenger trips higher

SAN JOSE – A burst of holiday air travel helped San Jose's passenger trips zoom higher in December, offering hope for momentum in 2025 – although travel fell for all of 2024.

December's numbers were a 6.8% improvement over November activity, when the airport took on about 954,800 passengers.

However, the South Bay travel complex had a difficult 12 months overall in 2024 in comparison with 2023.

In 2024, San Jose International Airport served 11.85 million passengers, up 2% from the 12.1 million passengers the aviation center handled in 2023, recent statistics show.

San Jose Airport, the first aviation hub serving Silicon Valley, also received a significant award from an influential air travel industry analyst.

Cirium, which analyzes and tracks aviation statistics and trends, cited San Jose 2024 for on-time performance. Cirium also noted that San Jose Had the six best on-time performance worldwide amongst medium-sized airports.

“San Jose International Airport continues to exemplify excellence as an important gateway to our region and city,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

The Cirium report found that 84.7% of San Jose airport departures in 2024 were on time.

In the identical study, Oakland Airport, officially referred to as San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, reported 81.1% of its departures occurred on time.

This helped Oakland Airport rank eleventh amongst mid-sized airports.

San Francisco International Airport didn’t make the highest 20 amongst major airports and was not mentioned within the report.

San Jose International Airport trends could provide a foundation for growth in 2025.

“Our team is committed to providing the best travel experience,” said Mookie Patel, San Jose aviation director.

The San Jose Airport recently reported that two airlines have decided to supply recent nonstop service that may connect San Jose to Las Vegas, Detroit and Baltimore starting within the spring and summer.

“We look forward to a new year of additional routes, new dining and shopping options, and continued investment in making San Jose Airport the easiest airport for Silicon Valley travelers,” Patel said.
