The Mirabell Gardens is one among many filming locations that tourists can visit in Salzburg. Just behind the Pegasus Fountain is the somewhat bizarre Dwarf Garden with sculptures of 320-year-old, mischievous-looking dwarves who made a cameo appearance within the film.

To follow the film from the start, head to the traditional Benedictine Nonnberg Abbey from 714, where Maria fought to turn out to be a nun. The cloister is positioned directly below the Hohensalzburg Fortress, which towers over Salzburg. The view is breathtaking.

Follow Maria's path from the abbey and enter the old town through the arches, past Salzburg Cathedral, to Residenzplatz, where she splashed within the fountain before boarding a bus for the von Trapp family home outside Salzburg.

Other places in Salzburg include the Mozartsteg, the small pedestrian bridge that Maria and the youngsters cross while singing “My Favorite Things”, the market they visit at Kajetanerplatz, where a weekly farmers' market still takes place every Friday.

One of the locations shown later within the film is actually breathtaking Rock riding schoolthe theater during which the von Trapps sing throughout the Salzburg Music Festival and which continues to be the venue for the annual festival to at the present time.

For a special treat, stay at Hotel Sacher Salzburg, where Julie Andrews stayed throughout the filming of the film.

See “The Hill.”

The music-filled hill seen within the film's opening scenes is in Germany, just across the border from Austria. The actual site is on private property and the owner is reportedly not particularly all in favour of tourists. However, there are public paths that run along the meadow and for those who are determined to see them, it’s value a visit follow the mountain path to catch a glimpse.

Easier to succeed in is the Untersberg, where Maria and the youngsters picnicked and which offers an exquisite view over the mountains and over Salzburg. It is usually included “The Sound of Music” tours, but when you desire to do it alone it's a brief 20 minute taxi ride.

And what concerning the von Trapp house? The original family villa stands in a secluded park at Traunstrasse 34. Once the actual home of the von Trapp family, it was later converted right into a hotel, which has now unfortunately closed and the gardens are also closed to the general public. But you can even walk around outside the positioning and check out the actual Villa Trapp.
