NBA All-Star HBCU Classic brings Morehouse, Tuskegee together in Oakland

Oakland – Oakland has lost many sports previously six years.

The Warriors took the bridge over the bay. The Raiders skipped the town completely and fled to Las Vegas. The A moved to Sacramento and likewise planned to depart the state.

But Oakland still has loads of love for basketball. It was never so clearer than on Saturday within the Oakland Arena, which Morehouse College and Tuskege University welcomed for the fourth annual NBA HBCU classic.

The tradition continues to be latest, but it is going to be difficult to realize this yr's edition. In an environment that resembled the very best type of spontaneous party, Tuskegee Morhouse 68-55 defeated.

But nearly all of the conversation then revolved across the joyful amount of arena, which sang to songs for song, danced in the course of the motion and revitalized what could easily have been an outdated spectacle.

Instead, it was a joyful triumphal celebration of every little thing the HBCU basketball experience has to supply.

“It had to be an HBCU event,” said Minehouse coach Douglas Whitler. “If you may have ever been in an HBCU game, you understand what I’m talking about. But the production, the fans who were within the constructing, the music, every little thing about this game was super big.

“I’m excited to have the option to participate. I’m excited to see that our young men were in a position to experience this weekend because I do know that it’s something that they may always remember for the remainder of their lives. “

Late in the second half, the lower bowl – almost full – started a wave, but this was not an ordinary wave. Accompanied by a tidal wave of noises, the cascade of sound and movement drowned the game itself.

It became clear what gushed under the surface all the time – this was not a typical basketball game.

“I actually have goose bumps for these young men,” said Tuskegee coach Benjy Taylor. “I played at the University of Richmond and played in Sweet 16. I played 30,000 and trained 30,000 before. So that these young men can experience this, it only shows that they can go back and forth anywhere to be happy and to keep this kind of environment, this kind of taste. You will tell your children and grandchildren that. “

Both teams thank the NBA for the hosts of the event, which HBCUS – a lot of them are based – would love to present their talents on the large stage.

And these talents stretched out of the square. Both teams had introduced half -time shows with marching bands and dancers, and the party continued after the last buzzer.

“We have a big brand, but we are a small city,” said Taylor. “Tuskegee is a strong place. And in order that we’re involved and that these young men have the chance to do that is superb. “
