SAN FRANCISCO — With Alex Cobb suffering a second setback in his recovery from offseason surgery, the Giants began moving the eggs elsewhere of their starting rotation. On Saturday, they accomplished a cope with the Toronto Blue Jays to amass Mitch White and place Cobb on the 60-day injured list.
The 29-year-old White gives the Giants additional depth of their bullpen and rotation. He has appeared in 62 profession games between the Blue Jays and Dodgers, including 22 with a 4.99 ERA, but was designated for task by Toronto this week when the Blue Jays activated two pitchers from the IL.
Cobb, 36, is now ineligible to return until May 27.
After navigating the early stages of his return from hip surgery with ease, Cobb has been slowed by discomfort in his throwing arm as he tries to accumulate his workload for the season. He felt a sense of tension in his shoulder when he was allowed to throw again after straining his elbow.
There was hope that he may very well be inserted into the Giants rotation around early May, but now that can be not less than just a few more weeks away.
White, the sixty fifth overall pick within the 2016 draft, played for Bellarmine Prep before playing college at Santa Clara.
