BALTIMORE (AP) — Masataka Yoshida hit a house run and had 4 RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox beat All-Star Corbin Burnes before defeating the Baltimore Orioles 12-10 on Friday night.
Burnes (12-5) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 4 innings – each profession highs – a performance unbecoming of the AL starter in last month's All-Star Game and the 2021 Cy Young Award winner.
Burnes hit two home runs, walked three and threw two wild pitches on a hot, humid night. His ERA rose from 2.71 to three.10, the best of the season.
“He was probably a little off,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “Just one of those nights. It wasn't a good one for him, but he battled through it with us. He's a great pitcher, probably one of the five best in the league.”
Ramón Urías hit 3 for 3 with a house run and five RBIs for the Orioles, who fell one game behind the first-place New York Yankees within the AL East. Rookie Jackson Holliday had his first game with 4 hits and scored three runs.
“Our offense kept fighting, but we couldn't get it done,” Holliday said. “But it's pretty special to score four goals.”
Although Baltimore scored 17 hits and cut a five-run deficit to 12-10, the team left 12 runners behind and never took the lead after the fourth inning.
Rafael Devers scored a run in the primary inning after which drove a two-run drive within the third to take a 4-1 lead. After the Orioles drew level within the second half, Yoshida capped the fourth inning with a three-run shot to make it 8-4.
“Just a smart hitter,” Cora said of Yoshida. “He's in good physical shape and hits the ball well.”
The rating was 8-6 before the Red Sox scored three runs within the seventh inning against Craig Kimbrel, who’s attempting to reclaim his job as Baltimore's closer. That game didn't help his efforts, nevertheless, as he was booed heavily by the house crowd after allowing a two-run homer to David Hamilton and a solo blast to Jarren Duran.
Cooper Criswell (5-4) earned the win despite allowing six runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings. He was the third of eight Boston pitchers to walk, with starter Brennan Bernadino managing just two outs before manager Alex Cora dug deep into his bullpen.
Kenley Jansen made his twenty third save within the ninth inning, securing Boston's second win in eight games against Baltimore this season.
TRAINING ROOM
Red Sox: Boston has activated 1B Triston Casas (strained ribs) from the 60-day DL and hopes his return will add more firepower to the lineup. “Hitting the ball out of the ballpark is important. That's what he brings to the equation,” Cora said of Casas, who had six home runs in 78 ABs before happening the IL on April 21. … Boston also reinstated RH Cooper Criswell from the Covid-19 IL, sent RH Chase Shugart to Triple-A Worcester and designated 1B/DH Dominic Smith (.237, 6 HRs, 34 RBIs in 83 games) for task. … The Red Sox expect OF Tyler O'Neil (leg infection) back on Saturday, Cora said.
Orioles: C Adley Rutschman was taken out of the sport a couple of minutes before the sport resulting from lower back discomfort.

Baltimore was near bringing back rookie Cade Povich (1-5, 6.27 ERA) from Triple-A Norfolk for Saturday. Manager Brandon Hyde said the move was intended to present 34-year-old Albert Suárez an additional day of rest after he set a season-high 6 2/3 innings on Sunday. Brayan Bello (10-5, 4.97) was expected to begin for Boston.
