BOSTON (AP) — Bowden Francis worked a no-hitter until the sixth inning and left the sector after allowing only one hit in seven innings. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Thursday night.
Francis (8-3) needed to pitch the minimum for five 1/3 innings, with the one Boston baserunner coming when Jarren Duran made an error within the fourth inning. Duran was then thrown out while attempting to steal second base.
The no-hit effort ended with one out within the sixth inning when Nick Sogard hit a soft single to center. Francis managed five strikeouts and no walks before being eliminated midway through the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead.
In his previous appearance, Francis threw eight hitless innings against the Angels before allowing a solo home run early within the ninth inning.
Genesis Cabrera allowed successful within the eighth inning and Chad Green pitched within the ninth. After hitting Mickey Gasper with a pitch, Green grounded Tyler O'Neill to shortstop, earning his sixteenth save and completing the two-hit shutout.
Kutter Crawford (8-12) held Toronto to 2 runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He managed two walks and three strikeouts. The game marked the debut of 44-year-old Rich Hill in 2024, making him the one lively player to have played in each of the last 20 seasons.
The Blue Jays took the lead within the third when Brian Serven hit a double and scored on a double by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. They increased their result in 2-0 within the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Addison Barger and Ernie Clement.
The Red Sox narrowly missed a triple play within the ninth inning when Leo Jimenez hit the ball within the air with runners on first and second base. Pitcher Greg Weissert pounced on the ball, got up and turned to catch the runner from second base. But Davis Schneider was in a position to jump back to first base and beat the relay.
