The Tribute in Light test begins, creating incredible beams of sunshine visible throughout New York City.

The Tribute in Light, an annual art installation commemorating the September 11 attacks, was tested on September 5, 2024, ahead of its twenty third anniversary. It consists of 88 vertical searchlights arranged in two columns of sunshine to represent the dual towers of the World Trade Center. They shall be visible from dusk on September 11 to dawn on September 12, 2024, inside a 60-mile radius of Lower Manhattan.

On clear nights the lights will be seen from 96 kilometers away.

The 88 xenon headlights (44 per tower) each devour 7,000 watts.

The lights are made by an Italian company called Space Cannon, which sends a team yearly to help with the installation.

The lighting is provided by the Municipal Art Society of New York. Around 30 technicians, electricians and stagehands work for about ten days to put in the lighting.

During a multi-day test phase, observers in Brooklyn, Staten Island, New Jersey and uptown Manhattan will help make sure the beams are precisely aligned.

Tribute in Light was conceived by artists John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, in addition to lighting consultant Paul Marantz.

“Tribute in Light” began as a brief memorial event for the attacks in early 2002, but has developed into an annual event.
