Bruins
The Bruins' training camp is just across the corner, and star goalie Jeremy Swayman has yet to sign a contract.
Although each side have spoken positively about their intention to work together on Swayman's extension, the edges are reportedly far apart. in response to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
On his podcast, 32 Thoughts, Friedman noted that the 4-year, $6.2 million offer that was reportedly the Bruins' offer was “undisputed.” Friedman believes that was certainly one of the offers that was on the table.
According to Friedman, Swayman is aiming for a much higher number.
“I also heard that the McAvoy contract was the requirement that [$9.5 million],” Friedman said. “So it’s obvious there’s a big discrepancy here.”
Not only was McAvoy's contract very expensive, it was also eight years. Swayman appears to be on the lookout for the identical long-term security with a high average annual value, but Boston's contracts don't even come near that range financially.
“I think at one point the eight-year deal was on the table, but it was in the six-year range,” Friedman said. “So I don't think anyone here was even close.”
Both Swayman and Boston remained optimistic that a deal might be done before training camp. But as training camp approaches, starting on September 15, there’s little positive news on the contract negotiations.
Friedman has heard that Swayman and Bruins President Cam Neely recently met in private, but doesn’t imagine that anything has modified on either side.
If Swayman is to stay Boston's No. 1 goalie in the long term, there’s clearly still some work to be done.
