There are divisive political beliefs in every single place nowadays, but business owners should bite their tongues.
In a current one Analysis of 19,898 Kickstarter campaignsWe found that emerging firms that expressed political opinions received less funding than people who remained apolitical.
As Professors WHO study Entrepreneurshipwe wanted to know the connection between political expression and crowdfunding success. So we checked out 1000’s of campaigns launched over a two-year period.
We scoured the campaigns for subtle expressions of conservative values - “I still remember that all lives matter, regardless of race or religion, and hope I made my idea of a sandwich shop clear,” to call only one example to call – and for more obvious expressions like “Drain the swamp and defend MAGA land.”
We've done the identical thing with subtle liberal perspectives – like “I'm fed up and annoyed by the lack of equality and diversity in the media” – and with overt views like “I believe that art matters + and the magic is real .” Also: Black lives matter.”
In the top, we found that all percentage point increase in political speech was related to a 9% decrease in funds raised for conservatives and a 17% decrease for liberals.
Our theory, supported by our results, is that individuals don’t expect someone to share political opinions in a business context. When entrepreneurs violate this expectation, it causes people to view them as unprofessional and ultimately hurts their crowdfunding performance.
The backlash against political speech doesn’t appear to affect everyone equally. Campaigns supported by third parties, corresponding to: B. “Kickstarter”Project we love“Badges were punished less, we found.” Photos or videos on a campaign page also appeared to reduce the negative effect. An entrepreneur's previous successful experiences were effective when he aligned himself with a conservative, but not liberal, voice.
Why it matters
How to turn out to be an entrepreneur increasingly vocal about politicsThey should understand the potential costs of authentic speaking. Our study shows that funders expect entrepreneurs to behave apolitically when crowdfunding and penalize those that express their political values. Although we've looked specifically at Kickstarter campaigns, the implications for established firms also on the lookout for investment are obvious.
To be fair, our work also finds evidence that entrepreneurs who appear more credible – for instance through the support of third parties or using multimedia – are less punished for political statements. But on the whole, entrepreneurs should not less than consider keeping quiet about politics of their financing discussions to make sure they don't hurt their probabilities.
What shouldn’t be yet known
While we focused on the impact of entrepreneurs' political statements, a natural query arises as as to if funders' political opinions influence whether or not they put money into a project. Researchers know that conservatives and liberals have a bias with regards to decision-making completely different. Therefore, we consider it’s critical that researchers address this query next. These kinds of studies will provide a more holistic view of how political opinions impact crowdfunding.
