Morning sports update
The latest on David Andrews: Among the various bad news for Patriots fans during Sunday's 30-13 loss to the 49ers was an injury to team captain and starting center David Andrews.
Andrews, 32, suffered a shoulder injury in the primary quarter and didn’t return. According to multiple reports, the longtime Patriot is now likely facing surgery that might end his season.
First, a Wednesday morning Reporting by Mark Daniels of MassLive noted that the offensive lineman faces a alternative: undergo shoulder surgery now and miss the rest of the 2024 season, or wait and take a look at to play through the season and risk missing time in 2025.
Shortly after Daniels' report, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport shared one other update.
“David Andrews is expected to undergo surgery to repair a serious shoulder injury and will likely be placed on injured reserve at the end of the season,” Rapoport said on social media.
“Andrews tried like crazy to get a different result,” Rapoport added in a follow-up. “But that seems to be the only choice for them [New England] steadfast.”
Update: Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo later confirmed that Andrews will undergo surgery during his surgery Press conference on Wednesday morning: “I know many of you are wondering about David Andrews. At this point it's already out there. Surgery will be required and he will likely move on [Injured Reserve] and ready for the season.”
Ahead of Wednesday's reports, Andrews spoke on the most recent episode of “The Quick Snap Podcast“ with former teammate Brian Hoyer, alluding to the decision to have the operation.
“It's frustrating to be injured. As a player, sometimes you have to make decisions about whether it's best for the team to be out and whether you can perform,” Andrews said.
Citing a principal from Bill Belichick, Andrews said he doesn't want to overstate his current position until he has a clearer idea of its severity and impact on his potential return to the field.
“This is where I need to figure some things out and see what I can do to be the best player I can be on Sunday,” he told Hoyer. “That’s the big thing. Anyone can go out there and play. But it's about being effective and I think that's more the human aspect than the football player – you want to do your best and make sure you try that.”
The Patriots, already thin on offense early in the season, struggled Sunday without Andrews' leadership and skills. New England allowed six sacks in the loss at San Francisco and has given up 17 sacks so far on the season (second most in the NFL behind the Browns).
“I’m just trying to figure all this out,” Andrews concluded. “It’s super frustrating, man.”
