University sports | The Alabama A&M football player from California succumbs to injuries sustained during a game

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A linebacker at Alabama's largest historically black university died Tuesday after a collision during a game in October that left him hospitalized for a month, based on an announcement from the university.

Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, was playing his first season as a linebacker at Alabama A&M University when he suffered a head injury within the annual Magic City Classic against rival Alabama State University on Oct. 26, based on an announcement from Alabama State University University. He remained hospitalized until his death Tuesday evening. The university didn’t provide any information in regards to the official reason behind death.

Burnett's condition worsened after his arrival on the hospital, where he was treated for “multiple brain bleeds and brain swelling,” based on a verified GoFundMe post from his sister Dominece James.

Burnett was from Lakewood (Los Angeles County) and transferred to Alabama A&M in 2024 after one season with the Grambling State University football program. He appeared in a complete of seven games throughout the 2024 season and recorded a season-best three tackles at Austin Peay State University.
