CUPERTINO — Authorities say 4 young children were injured — two seriously — in a suspected DUI collision in Cupertino over the weekend.
The accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Saturday near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brooks Jarosz said in a news release.
The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with one other vehicle and hit a utility pole, Jarosz said. Four children, ages 11, 8, 7 and 4, who were on the sidewalk on the time, were also struck.
“Several 911 calls described a horrific scene that could have been prevented,” Jarosz said within the news release.
Two of the kids suffered serious injuries, Jarosz said. Paramedics performed life-saving measures and all 4 were taken to area hospitals.
One child remained in critical condition Monday.
The driver of the Mazda – who was a 38-year-old man from Cupertino – was arrested and brought to county jail on a charge of driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, Jarosz said.
The sheriff's team of traffic accident reconstruction specialists is investigating the collision.
