WASHINGTON (AP) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalized after “sustaining an injury” during an official appointment in Luxembourg, in response to a spokesman.

Pelosi, 84, was in Europe with a bipartisan congressional delegation to mark the eightieth anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Her spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a press release that she was “currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals” and was unable to attend the rest of her trip.

He didn’t describe the character of her injury or provide further details, but an individual acquainted with the incident said Pelosi tripped and fell at an event with other members of Congress. Another person acquainted with the situation said she injured her hip. The people requested anonymity to talk in regards to the fall because they weren’t authorized to discuss it publicly.

Krager said Pelosi “looks forward to returning to the United States soon.”

Members on the trip included Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, who posted on social media that he was “praying for a speedy recovery” for Pelosi. In a gaggle photo on Friday on the US Embassy in Luxembourg, the 2 lawmakers were captured holding hands.

“I am disappointed that Speaker Emerita Pelosi will not be able to attend the rest of our delegation's events this weekend, knowing how much she was looking forward to honoring our veterans,” McCaul wrote on X. “But she is strong , and I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time.”

The former leader's downfall comes two years after her husband Paul was attacked by a person with a hammer of their San Francisco home. The man, who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in October, broke into her home searching for Pelosi.

Pelosi, who was first elected in 1987 and served as speaker twice, stepped down from her leadership post two years ago but remained in Congress and was re-elected to represent her San Francisco district in November.

She has remained lively within the two years since leaving the highest job, working privately and publicly with Democrats and attending official events. Last summer, she was instrumental in her party's behind-the-scenes efforts to pressure President Joe Biden to vacate the presidency.

She attended the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington last weekend and was within the Senate on Monday to attend the swearing-in of her former Democratic House colleagues, Adam Schiff of California and Andy Kim of New Jersey.

Earlier this week, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 82, tripped and fell on the Senate floor, spraining his wrist and cutting his face. McConnell, who’s stepping down from his leadership post at the top of the 12 months, missed Senate votes on Thursday after his leg became stiff from the autumn, his office said.
