The Giants have agreed to contracts with first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., right-hander Camilo Doval and right-hander Tyler Rogers, avoiding arbitration with all three players.
Wade will make $5 million and Doval will earn $4.525 million, in response to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. According to FanSided's Jeff Young, Rogers will make $5.25 million.
Last November, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski signed a one-year, $9.25 million contract to also avoid arbitration. Rogers, Wade and Yastrzemski are scheduled to turn into free agents after the 2025 season.
Wade, who turned 31 on New Year's Day, struggled with a left hamstring injury last season that limited him to 117 games, but he still posted a .260 batting average and .380 on-base percentage, which might have been tied for seventh in all of baseball if Wade had qualified. Despite his ability to achieve base, Wade only hit eight home runs with a .381 batting average rated below average for first basemen.
“I got to play with LaMonte,” president of baseball operations Buster Posey said on the Winter Meetings. “I do know what he can bring to a team and the way well he gets on base and plays good defense. He's a extremely good player.
The 27-year-old Doval endured the worst season of his major league profession, posting a career-worst 4.88 ERA over 59 innings. He lost the closer role in August when the Giants demoted him to Triple-A Sacramento. As bad as last season was, Posey said on the Winter Meetings that he was “optimistic” that Doval would play for the Giants in 2025. The former All-Star still retains elite speed (96th percentile) and an efficient slider.
“Everyone is going to have trouble at some point,” manager Bob Melvin said on the Winter Meetings. “It's all about how you deal with it and I think he handled it wonderfully. He went there and worked on the things we asked him to do. It’s very rare that you find guys who throw 99 (mph) and have a wipeout slider and aren’t comfortable in the box.”
The 34-year-old Rogers maintained his status as certainly one of the Giants' best relievers this millennium, posting a 2.82 ERA over 70 1/3 innings and leading the National League in games played (77).
The Giants increased their catching depth on Wednesday afternoon, acquiring backstop Sam Huff off waivers from the Texas Rangers. In a corresponding move, right-hander Austin Warren was designated for task.
Huff, 26, is a profession .258/.313/.455 hitter with 10 home runs and 20 RBIs in 78 profession games. Defensively, Huff is value -3 defensive runs saved. He played in parts of 4 major league seasons and appeared in only three games last yr.
With Huff in the combo, the Giants have 4 catchers on their 40-man roster: Huff, Patrick Bailey, Tom Murphy and Blake Sabol. While Bailey played 106 games en path to his first Gold Glove, the Giants needed to depend on backup catchers, while Murphy missed nearly your entire season last season with a left knee injury. In addition to Bailey and Murphy, Sabol (eight games), Curt Casali (38), Jakson Reetz (six) and Andrew Knapp (two) saw time behind the plate for the Giants.
